What does Luke 9:57 mean?

Someone approached Jesus with what sounds like total commitment, promising to follow him anywhere. It's the kind of bold declaration that catches our attention, and at first it seems admirable. Jesus would respond to this statement by pointing out some hard truths about what following him actually costs, reminding the man that unlike foxes and birds, Jesus had nowhere to lay his head. The gospel is showing us that enthusiasm and genuine discipleship aren't always the same thing. Sometimes we offer our commitment before we've counted the cost, and Jesus invites us to think carefully about what we're really signing up for rather than making promises in a moment of emotion.
