Luke 9:55
“But he turned and rebuked them, “You don’t know of what kind of spirit you are.”
What does Luke 9:55 mean?
Jesus is responding to his disciples James and John, who've just suggested calling down fire from heaven to destroy a Samaritan village that rejected him. His rebuke isn't angry, but corrective, pointing out that they're being driven by a vengeful spirit rather than the loving, redemptive one he came to model. He's essentially saying, "You're not thinking like I think, or feeling what I feel, about people who oppose us." It's a gentle but firm reminder that following him means adopting his compassionate nature, even toward those who hurt or reject us, not matching their hostility with our own.
