What does Luke 9:49 mean?

John and the other disciples had just witnessed someone outside their group successfully casting out demons using Jesus's name. Rather than celebrate this victory over evil, they stopped the person because he wasn't part of their inner circle. It's a very human response: we tend to trust and validate only what we can control or what stays within our familiar boundaries. John was essentially saying, "He's doing good work, but he's not one of us, so we shut him down." What makes this moment beautiful is what happens next in the story, when Jesus gently corrects them, reminding them that opposition to evil in his name is ultimately unity with him, not division.
