What does Luke 9:40 mean?

A desperate father is speaking here, describing a moment when his son was seized by a destructive spirit. He'd brought his boy to Jesus's disciples, hoping they could help, but they had failed to drive out the oppressive force. There's real frustration in his words, the kind that comes when you've asked for help and been turned away empty-handed. What makes this moment poignant is that it shows even Jesus's closest followers had limits to their faith and power. They weren't able to do what they'd been given authority to do. For anyone who's ever felt let down by people or institutions you thought would come through for you, this moment feels achingly real, right before Jesus steps in to demonstrate what's actually possible when faith connects with his power.
