What does Luke 9:38 mean?

A desperate father pushes through the crowd surrounding Jesus, calling out with raw urgency because his son—his only child—needs help. There's a particular vulnerability in those words "my only child," the weight of everything a parent hopes for concentrated in one precious life. This man doesn't worry about protocol or whether it's the right moment; he simply speaks his need directly to Jesus, trusting that a teacher worth listening to would also be worth listening to him.
