What does Luke 9:34 mean?

This moment captures the disciples' encounter with something far beyond their everyday experience. Jesus had just been transfigured before them, his appearance transformed into brilliant light, and now a cloud descends and envelops them completely. That cloud carries deep spiritual weight in Scripture, often signaling God's direct presence, just as it did when God guided the Israelites through the wilderness or filled Solomon's temple. The fear they felt wasn't simple fright but rather the kind of awe that comes from standing at the edge of the holy and mysterious. They couldn't see clearly anymore, couldn't control what was happening, and were being drawn into something larger than themselves. It's a very human response to encountering the divine: we both long for God's presence and find it almost unbearably overwhelming when we sense it directly. If you've ever felt small before something vast and true, you know what they experienced in that moment.
