Luke 9:19

They answered, “‘John the Baptizer,’ but others say, ‘Elijah,’ and others, that one of the old prophets is risen again.”

What does Luke 9:19 mean?

When people saw Jesus teaching and healing, they were trying to make sense of him using the only framework they had. They wondered if he might be John the Baptist come back to life, or Elijah (the prophet many believed would return before God's promised restoration of all things), or perhaps another great prophet from Israel's past returning with power. What's striking is that everyone recognized something extraordinary was happening, even if they couldn't quite name who Jesus was. Sometimes when we encounter something beyond our expectations, we scramble to fit it into familiar categories, and that's exactly what was happening here.
