But Jesus hearing it, answered him, “Don’t be afraid. Only believe, and she will be healed.”

What does Luke 8:50 mean?

When Jairus learns that his daughter has died, fear threatens to overwhelm him completely. Jesus responds not by dismissing his grief or offering false comfort, but by calling him toward faith in the midst of devastating news. The invitation to "only believe" isn't about mustering up positive thinking, but about trusting Jesus' power and care even when circumstances look hopeless. What follows shows what that belief makes possible: Jesus goes to the girl anyway and restores her to life. For anyone facing impossible situations or receiving unwelcome news, this moment offers something real. Faith here means choosing to hold onto what we know about Jesus' character and compassion, even when our circumstances tempt us toward despair. Healing, whether physical or emotional or spiritual, often begins when we stop letting our fears set the boundaries of what God can do.
