“and certain women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary who was called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out;”
What does Luke 8:2 mean?
Luke introduces us here to Mary Magdalene as someone who experienced genuine healing and freedom. The mention of "seven demons" wasn't unusual language for first-century people describing severe spiritual or mental distress, and it marks how desperate her condition was before meeting Jesus. What matters most is that she was restored to wholeness, which is why she became one of Jesus's most devoted followers and why her presence in the resurrection accounts (she's often the first to encounter the risen Jesus) carries such significance. Her story reminds us that no matter how broken or trapped someone feels, healing and a new beginning are possible through Jesus.
