Luke 8:18

Be careful therefore how you hear. For whoever has, to him will be given; and whoever doesn’t have, from him will be taken away even that which he thinks he has.”

What does Luke 8:18 mean?

Jesus is talking about how we listen to his teaching—and by extension, how we take in truth generally. If you're genuinely open and attentive to what you're hearing, you'll find it takes root in you and grows deeper over time. But if you're careless or dismissive, even the little understanding you think you have can slip away because you're not nurturing it. This isn't about judgment or punishment, but about how growth actually works. A farmer who tends his crops carefully ends up with abundance, while someone who neglects what's been planted loses everything. The same principle applies to our spiritual lives: the attention and care we give to truth shapes what we're able to receive and hold onto.
