“Why do you see the speck of chaff that is in your brother’s eye, but don’t consider the beam that is in your own eye?”
What does Luke 6:41 mean?
Jesus is pointing out a pattern we all recognize in ourselves: we tend to notice small flaws in others while being blind to our own bigger ones. The "speck of chaff" and "beam" are deliberately exaggerated to show how backwards this is, like criticizing someone for having a grain of dust in their eye while a wooden plank sticks out of yours. This isn't just about being hypocritical, though it is that. It's about recognizing that when we're quick to judge others, we're usually avoiding the harder work of looking honestly at ourselves. Before we try to help someone else with their struggles, we need to do some real soul-searching about our own.
