“Woe, when men speak well of you, for their fathers did the same thing to the false prophets.”
What does Luke 6:26 mean?
Jesus is warning us that universal praise can be a spiritual danger sign, not a blessing. When everyone around us approves of what we're doing and saying, it might mean we're avoiding anything costly, countercultural, or truly prophetic. Throughout history, false prophets told people what they wanted to hear, and they were rewarded with popularity and affection—which is exactly why they were false. This doesn't mean all approval is bad, but it invites us to examine our motives. Are we speaking truth even when it's unpopular, or have we shaped our message to please our audience? The hardest words often come from the people and places we love most, and that difficulty is sometimes a sign we're on the right track.
