“But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them. Then they will fast in those days.””
What does Luke 5:35 mean?
When Jesus is taken from his followers, they'll naturally grieve and fast—not as a permanent rule, but as a genuine human response to loss. Jesus uses the image of a wedding to explain that joy in his presence is real and shouldn't be forced into sadness, but when separation comes, sorrow will be appropriate. He's telling his disciples that their grief after his death and ascension won't be wrong or out of place. This brief saying acknowledges that following Jesus includes both the closeness of his earthly ministry and the pain of his absence, preparing them (and us) for both seasons.
