But Jesus, perceiving their thoughts, answered them, “Why are you reasoning so in your hearts?

What does Luke 5:22 mean?

Jesus had just claimed to forgive a paralyzed man's sins, which shocked the religious leaders in the room. They thought it was blasphemy for anyone but God to forgive sins, and Jesus could read the silent criticism flickering across their faces. Rather than let their doubts fester in silence, he calls them out directly and asks why they're wrestling with these questions. There's something both confronting and kind in this moment. Jesus isn't pretending he doesn't notice their skepticism, but he's also inviting them to voice it rather than hide it. He seems to be saying: "I see your struggle. Don't just stew in doubt alone. Bring it to me." For anyone carrying hidden doubts or wrestling with faith, this offers permission to stop pretending and actually engage with what troubles us.
