Luke 4:6

What does Luke 4:6 mean?
The devil is making what sounds like a straightforward business deal to Jesus during his time in the wilderness, offering him power and recognition in exchange for worship. This temptation works on a real human level because authority and influence genuinely matter in our world, and the offer seems honest—as if the devil simply possesses these things and can hand them out. What makes this moment significant is that Jesus doesn't argue about whether the devil controls earthly kingdoms or whether the offer is real. Instead, he refuses because accepting would mean serving the wrong master, which would compromise everything he came to do. For those facing temptation, this shows us that sometimes the most dangerous offers aren't lies or obviously evil things, but legitimate goods pursued in the wrong way or from the wrong source. The real question isn't always "Is this bad?" but "Is this where my allegiance belongs?"
