What does Luke 4:17 mean?

When Jesus was invited to read Scripture in the synagogue, he was given the Isaiah scroll, which was one of the most treasured texts in Jewish worship. He opened it and located a specific passage, which Matthew's account tells us was about the Spirit of the Lord anointing someone to bring good news to the poor and freedom to the captive. This moment shows Jesus engaging with Scripture the way faithful Jewish teachers did, and the careful way he selected that particular passage suggests he knew exactly what he wanted to say about his own mission.
