Luke 3:2
“in the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness.”
What does Luke 3:2 mean?
John the Baptist received his calling during a specific historical moment, when two men held authority over Jewish religious life. Annas had been high priest years before but retained enormous influence, while Caiaphas held the official position. The fact that Luke names both shows us this wasn't a time of spiritual confusion, but rather a moment when God's word came directly to John even as the religious establishment carried on with business as usual. John would eventually become the forerunner to Jesus, preparing people's hearts in the wilderness, which was far from the centers of power in Jerusalem. Sometimes God's most important work happens on the margins, away from titles and institutions, spoken to someone willing to listen in an unlikely place.
