What does Luke 3:15 mean?
The Jewish people during John the Baptist's ministry were hungry for hope. A deliverer, or messiah, had been promised for centuries, and John's powerful preaching and baptism movement stirred something deep in people's hearts, making them wonder if he might be the one they'd been waiting for. John wasn't the messiah, though, and what happens next in Luke's account shows John himself redirecting that expectation toward Jesus. This moment captures something real about human longing: when we encounter someone who speaks truth or calls us toward change, we naturally want to believe they hold the ultimate answers. The passage invites us to notice where we place our hopes and whether we're open to having them redirected toward what's actually true.
