“While he blessed them, he withdrew from them, and was carried up into heaven.”
What does Luke 24:51 mean?
After Jesus had spent time with his disciples following his resurrection, teaching them and preparing them for what was ahead, he lifted his hands in blessing over them. In that moment of benediction, he began to rise, ascending visibly into heaven until he was no longer with them. This wasn't a departure in shame or defeat, but one wrapped in grace, his final earthly act being a gesture of blessing toward those he loved. For the disciples watching, this would have been both wonderful and disorienting. Jesus had returned from death, confirming his victory, yet now he was leaving again. But the blessing he gave them as he departed was meant to sustain them. He wasn't abandoning them unprepared; he was sending them out under his favor, marked by his affection and care.
