What does Luke 23:3 mean?
Jesus stands before Pilate accused of claiming kingship, which Rome saw as a threat to its authority. When Pilate asks directly if Jesus is a king, Jesus responds with a phrase that's intentionally ambiguous: "So you say." Rather than a simple yes or no, he deflects the question back to Pilate's own framing, suggesting that whatever Pilate means by "king," Jesus means something entirely different. In this moment, Jesus refuses to play by the world's definitions of power and authority, even as he faces the consequences of that refusal. It's a gentle way of saying, "You've already decided what you think I am, so speak your own truth."
