What does Luke 22:57 mean?
Peter is facing the heat after Jesus's arrest, and a servant girl recognizes him as someone who was with Jesus. Instead of standing by his teacher, Peter panics and lies, claiming he doesn't even know him. This is the first of three denials Peter makes that night, each one a step further away from courage as his fear grows. What makes this moment so painfully human is how it shows us that even someone deeply committed to Jesus can abandon him when the stakes feel too high. Peter isn't being asked to die yet, just to acknowledge a connection, and still he can't do it. Later, after Jesus rises, Jesus will restore Peter and redirect that fearfulness into faith, but in this raw moment we see someone we might recognize in ourselves, someone who fails when it matters most.
