What does Luke 20:44 mean?
Jesus poses this question to the religious teachers who've been challenging him, and it cuts right to the heart of who he actually is. The teachers believed the Messiah would be David's descendant, a son of David, yet the Psalms show David himself addressing the Messiah as "Lord." How could someone be both a descendant and a superior at the same time? What Jesus is really doing is inviting people to think beyond their assumptions about what the Messiah would look like. He's not just another powerful ruler in David's line, he's something far greater, which is why even Israel's greatest king bows to him. It's a gentle but profound way of saying that Jesus is more than human ancestry or earthly authority could explain.
