What does Luke 20:41 mean?
Jesus is asking a question that puzzles the religious leaders of his day. On the surface, everyone expected the Messiah (the Christ) to be a descendant of King David, since the Old Testament promised that the Messiah would come from David's line. But Jesus is hinting at something deeper: if the Christ is merely David's son, how can he also be David's Lord (as the Psalms suggest)? He's inviting them to think beyond the simple genealogical answer they've always accepted. For those of us listening in, the question opens up the mystery that Jesus himself is both fully human and fully divine, both descendant and ruler, both present and eternal in a way that defies neat categories.
