What does Luke 20:4 mean?
Jesus is asking the religious leaders a clever question about John the Baptist's authority. When Jesus asks if John's baptism came "from heaven" or "from men," he's really asking whether they believed John was sent by God or was just making up his own practice. This matters because if they admit John was from God, they'd have to explain why they didn't listen to him, and if they say he was just a man, they risk offending the crowds who respected John deeply. Jesus uses their own unwillingness to answer honestly to show that their rejection of him isn't really about evidence, but about their hearts being closed.
