What does Luke 20:30 mean?
In Jesus's parable about the resurrection, this verse describes the second brother in a line of seven who each married the same woman according to Jewish law. When a man died without children, his brother was obligated to marry the widow to carry on the family name, a practice called levirate marriage. Like his older brother before him, this second husband also died without producing an heir, leaving the widow to pass to the next brother. The repetition of this pattern sets up Jesus's point: these brothers were so focused on earthly concerns and legal requirements that they missed something far more important about God's kingdom and the afterlife.
