Luke 20:25
“He said to them, “Then give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.””
What does Luke 20:25 mean?
Jesus was answering a trap question about whether it's right to pay taxes to Rome, the occupying power. His answer was brilliantly practical: yes, use Caesar's coins to pay Caesar's taxes (they're stamped with his image anyway), but recognize that what belongs to God—your heart, your loyalty, your deepest self—is a separate matter entirely. He wasn't saying these two obligations are equal or that one cancels out the other. He was pointing out that we can honor our earthly responsibilities without letting them override what we owe to God. For many of us today, that's a helpful reminder when we're caught between competing demands: it's possible to be a faithful citizen and a faithful follower of Jesus at the same time.
