Luke 20:23
“But he perceived their craftiness, and said to them, “Why do you test me?”
What does Luke 20:23 mean?
Jesus saw right through the trap his critics were setting. They'd come with a carefully worded question about paying taxes to Caesar, hoping to catch him in a statement that would either anger the Roman authorities or alienate his followers. Instead of falling for it, Jesus calls out what's really happening: they're testing him, not genuinely seeking truth. There's something deeply reassuring in this moment, especially when we're tempted to hide our real struggles behind polite questions. Jesus invites us to bring our honest selves to him rather than the versions we think we should present.
