What does Luke 20:21 mean?
These words sound like genuine praise, but they're actually the opening move of a trap. The questioners (religious leaders trying to discredit Jesus) are buttering him up before asking whether Jews should pay taxes to Rome, a question designed so either answer would get him in trouble. They're betting that flattery will lower his guard and force him into a political corner. What's striking is that everything they said about Jesus was actually true, even though they didn't mean it kindly. He really did teach faithfully without favoritism, regardless of who was listening or what it might cost him. Sometimes the most honest things about Jesus come from people who aren't trying to honor him at all. It's a reminder that truth has a way of escaping our mouths even when we're scheming, and that Jesus' character was so consistent that even his enemies had to acknowledge it.
