What does Luke 20:2 mean?

The religious leaders are confronting Jesus after he's just cleared the temple, and they want to know his credentials. In their world, authority came from official appointment, training, or lineage, and Jesus had none of those conventional markers. What troubles them isn't just his actions but that he seems to operate outside their system entirely, answering to no one they recognize. This question gets at something many of us wrestle with too: we want to know who's really qualified to speak into our lives, and whether someone's claim on our attention is legitimate. Jesus' answer (which follows) will turn the question back on them, inviting them to think about where true authority actually comes from.
