What does Luke 20:18 mean?
Jesus is describing two kinds of danger that come from rejecting him, using the image of a stone. If you stumble and fall against the stone yourself, you'll be hurt and broken by the impact, but you might survive. However, if the stone falls on you from above, the weight and force will destroy you completely, leaving nothing behind. He's speaking about consequences that flow from our own choices. When we resist him halfheartedly or push back against what he stands for, we experience the friction and pain of that resistance ourselves. But when we actively oppose him or build our lives against his foundation, the full force of God's purposes will eventually come down on us with nothing left undone. The image is sobering: there's a difference between the natural hurt that comes from bumping against truth, and the total destruction that comes from being crushed under the weight of God's ultimate plan.
