What does Luke 2:28 mean?

Simeon, an elderly man waiting his whole life to see God's promised Messiah, finally encounters the infant Jesus in the temple. In this moment of profound recognition, he holds the baby and bursts into grateful prayer, blessing God for allowing him to witness what he'd been promised. It's a picture of joy breaking through long years of faithful waiting, and of an older person recognizing something sacred that many around him didn't yet understand. His immediate impulse to praise God shows how deeply he grasped who this child truly was.
