Luke 2:20
βThe shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, just as it was told them.β
What does Luke 2:20 mean?
The shepherds have just witnessed something extraordinary: angels announcing Jesus's birth and then finding the baby exactly as described. Their return to their fields while glorifying God shows that encountering the divine transformed them immediately, not someday, but right then. This isn't quiet, private faith but active praise they couldn't help but overflow with. Luke tells us they're praising God specifically for what they'd heard and seen themselves, suggesting that direct personal experience of God's faithfulness creates authentic joy that naturally spills out into the world around them.
