Luke 18:34
“They understood none of these things. This saying was hidden from them, and they didn’t understand the things that were said.”
What does Luke 18:34 mean?
The disciples had just heard Jesus predict his death and resurrection, but the weight of what he was telling them couldn't quite land. Sometimes our minds protect us from things we're not ready to bear, and sometimes God himself seems to close our understanding temporarily so we can receive hard truths at the right moment, not before. Luke is being honest about how bewildering Jesus's path was to those closest to him, reminding us that confusion and spiritual blindness aren't character flaws but part of how humans genuinely process mystery and pain. If you've ever felt unable to grasp something someone tried to explain to you during a crisis, you know this feeling: the words were there, but they couldn't quite reach you yet.
