What does Luke 18:21 mean?

The rich young man is answering Jesus, claiming he's kept all the commandments since childhood. It's a confident assertion, but there's a quiet tension here: he came to Jesus asking what he still lacked, which suggests something inside him knows his rule-keeping isn't quite enough. Jesus will soon ask him to sell everything and give to the poor, revealing that wealth has actually become his hidden master. This moment shows us how easy it can be to follow external rules while missing the deeper invitation to trust God completely, especially when it costs us something we love.
