Luke 18:19
“Jesus asked him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good, except one—God.”
What does Luke 18:19 mean?
When a wealthy man addresses Jesus respectfully as "good teacher," Jesus redirects the conversation by pointing out that true goodness belongs to God alone. This isn't Jesus denying his own goodness, but rather inviting the man to recognize where real moral perfection comes from and to see that following God's commands matters more than external respectability. The comment opens a door for deeper reflection: if only God is truly good, then what does that mean for how we live and what we trust in? Jesus is gently challenging this man (and us) to examine whether we're seeking genuine righteousness or just the appearance of being good.
