What does Luke 18:10 mean?
This is the opening of one of Jesus's most famous parables, sometimes called the story of the Pharisee and the tax collector. To understand why it matters, you need to know that these two men represented opposite ends of the social and spiritual ladder in Jesus's world. Pharisees were respected religious leaders who studied Scripture carefully and kept the law as they understood it, while tax collectors were seen as traitors and cheaters who worked for Rome's occupying forces. The fact that both men go to pray sets up a striking contrast, because we're about to see that outward status and religious practice don't tell the whole story about what God actually values.
