Luke 17:7
“But who is there among you, having a servant plowing or keeping sheep, that will say, when he comes in from the field, ‘Come immediately and sit down at the table,’”
What does Luke 17:7 mean?
Jesus uses a picture from everyday farm life to make a point about how we relate to God. In his time, servants worked hard all day in the fields, and it would've been unthinkable for an employer to welcome them to the table as equals right away. The servant would naturally clean up and handle evening tasks first. He's not endorsing harshness toward workers, but rather helping us see something about our own attitude toward obedience. Often we think God owes us rest, comfort, or recognition the moment we do something good for him. Jesus is gently suggesting that serving God isn't a transaction where we earn rewards by doing the bare minimum. There's a different kind of honor in simply doing what's needed without expecting applause.
