Luke 17:18
βWere there none found who returned to give glory to God, except this stranger?ββ
What does Luke 17:18 mean?
Jesus asks this question after healing ten lepers, only one of whom came back to say thank you. The one who returned happened to be a Samaritan, someone from a group that Jews typically despised and avoided. What makes the question sting is that nine people experienced the same miraculous healing, yet only the outsider felt moved to express gratitude and acknowledge God's hand in it. The verse captures something painfully human: we can receive extraordinary gifts and forget to be grateful, especially when healing or relief comes as an answer to desperate prayer. But it also shows us that genuine thankfulness often comes from unexpected places and unexpected people. Jesus seems surprised and sad, not angry, as if he's pointing out a missed opportunity for those nine to recognize and honor the God who saved them.
