Luke 16:8
““His lord commended the dishonest manager because he had done wisely, for the children of this world are, in their own generation, wiser than the children of the light.”
What does Luke 16:8 mean?
In this surprising moment, Jesus describes a manager who was about to be fired for mishandling his employer's money. To secure his future, the manager quickly reduced what people owed his boss, winning their favor and ensuring they'd help him later. His employer acknowledges the shrewdness of this move, not because dishonesty is good, but because the manager acted decisively with his resources to accomplish his goal. Jesus uses this to make a pointed observation: people focused on worldly success often pursue their aims with more urgency and creativity than those who follow Jesus do. Those "of the light" (his followers) sometimes approach their spiritual lives passively, while people driven by self-interest move with real intention. Rather than endorsing dishonesty, Jesus is challenging us to bring that same focused energy to what matters eternally, using whatever we have wisely and urgently, since life is short and our opportunities limited.
