What does Luke 15:6 mean?

A shepherd who's been frantically searching finds his lost sheep and rushes home so overcome with joy that he immediately gathers everyone around him. He's not quietly relieved or keeping it to himself, but insisting that his whole community celebrate with him. The point isn't really about the sheep, though, it's about how staggering and personal the loss and recovery feel to him. Jesus tells this story to show us how God responds when someone who's wandered away comes back, and how that reunion matters so much that heaven itself throws a party over it. If you're feeling lost right now, or if you've felt abandoned, this paints a picture of being sought after and celebrated rather than written off or forgotten.
