Luke 15:4
““Which of you men, if you had one hundred sheep, and lost one of them, wouldn’t leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one that was lost, until he found it?”
What does Luke 15:4 mean?
Jesus is asking us to imagine ourselves as a shepherd with a flock of one hundred sheep. When one wanders off, would we really just accept the loss and tend to the ninety-nine safely gathered? Of course not, he's saying, because that one sheep matters. This is the beginning of a parable about how God pursues those who are lost or far from him with the same determination a good shepherd shows. The power of the story lies in its reversal of what seems logical. You might think a shepherd would cut losses and protect what's already safe, but genuine care doesn't calculate that way. God's love isn't about managing a flock efficiently, it's about personal concern for each individual, even when the effort costs something.
