What does Luke 15:28 mean?
The older brother in this parable has just learned that his father threw a huge celebration for the wayward younger son who squandered everything and came home. Instead of rejoicing, the older brother feels betrayed, angry that his years of faithful service seem unappreciated compared to the lavish welcome given to his brother. What's remarkable here is the father's response: rather than scolding the older son for his bitterness, the father goes out to him with the same patient love he showed the younger son, essentially begging him to come celebrate too. This scene captures something deeply human about jealousy and how hard it can be to receive grace when we feel we've earned better treatment through our own effort. But it also shows that God's generosity isn't a zero-sum game, where someone else's forgiveness diminishes our worth. The father has room in his heart for both sons, and he pursues the angry one just as earnestly as he pursued the lost one.
