What does Luke 15:26 mean?
The older son in this parable has just returned from the fields and hears music and celebration coming from his father's house. When he learns that his wayward brother has returned home and is being welcomed with a feast, something inside him hardens. Rather than join in, he stays outside, and it's the father who comes out to him, though first the older son calls a servant to find out what's happening. This moment shows how resentment can isolate us even when we're physically close to those we love. The older son's question reveals he's already decided to be upset before he even knows the full story. His turning away and his need to ask a servant instead of going to his father himself demonstrates how bitterness creates distance, even from the people who long to include us. Many of us know that feeling of being on the outside, watching others celebrate, and that hollow loneliness can feel very real.
