What does Luke 15:24 mean?
The father in the parable of the prodigal son speaks these words after his wayward child returns home, bedraggled and repentant. When he says his son "was dead," he means the relationship was broken and the son seemed lost to him, not that the boy had literally died. Now that the son has come back, the father experiences a kind of resurrection, a restoration of what seemed beyond recovery. The celebration that follows isn't about overlooking what the son did wrong, but about the sheer joy of reconciliation and a second chance. It captures something real about how we experience grace: the relief and happiness when something precious is restored, when someone we thought was gone comes home.
