Luke 15:20
““He arose, and came to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him, and was moved with compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.”
What does Luke 15:20 mean?
This is the climax of Jesus' parable about a son who walked away from his father's home after demanding his inheritance early. When the son finally comes to his senses and decides to return, hoping only to work as a servant since he's blown through everything, his father doesn't wait for explanations or apologies. The father spots him while he's still in the distance and runs toward him, embracing him with kisses and overwhelming affection. What makes this moment so powerful is the father's response. In that culture, a respectable older man wouldn't run publicly or show such uninhibited emotion, yet he abandons all dignity because his love is greater than his concern for appearances. Jesus uses this scene to show us how God welcomes us back when we turn toward him, not with anger or conditions, but with joy and tenderness. There's nothing we can do to earn or deserve this kind of love, only receive it.
