“But when he came to himself he said, ‘How many hired servants of my father’s have bread enough to spare, and I’m dying with hunger!”
What does Luke 15:17 mean?
The prodigal son finally stops and thinks clearly about his situation. He's been living recklessly after squandering his inheritance, and now he's desperately poor, tending pigs and envying their food. What strikes him is that even his father's hired workers, people with the lowest status in the household, have security and enough to eat. This moment of honest self-awareness, of "coming to himself," is the turning point where he realizes he needs to go home and face his father, not as a son deserving love, but simply asking for work as a servant. It's that painful but necessary moment many of us experience when we stop making excuses and see our circumstances clearly.
