What does Luke 14:29 mean?

Jesus is describing what happens when someone starts building a house but runs out of resources to complete it. Everyone in the village would see the abandoned, half-finished structure and laugh at the builder's poor planning and failed effort. He's using this relatable picture to illustrate a deeper point: before you commit to something major (in context, following him as a disciple), you need to count the real cost and be honest about whether you're ready to see it through. Starting something you can't finish doesn't just affect you—it becomes public failure that invites ridicule.
