““Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that kills the prophets, and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, like a hen gathers her own brood under her wings, and you refused!”
What does Luke 13:34 mean?
Jesus is speaking here with deep sorrow over Jerusalem's rejection of God's messengers throughout history. He uses a tender image of a mother hen protecting her chicks under her wings to show how desperately he wanted to shelter and care for the city's people, but they consistently turned away from him and those he sent. The pain in these words comes from blocked love, not anger. Jesus isn't punishing Jerusalem for past wrongs, but grieving that despite his longing to gather them close and keep them safe, they chose rejection again and again.
