Luke 12:48
“but he who didn’t know, and did things worthy of stripes, will be beaten with few stripes. To whomever much is given, of him will much be required; and to whom much was entrusted, of him more will be asked.”
What does Luke 12:48 mean?
Jesus is teaching that accountability scales with knowledge and privilege. If you've been given more—whether that's resources, education, opportunity, or understanding of what's right—you'll be held to a higher standard. Conversely, someone who acts wrongly out of genuine ignorance faces a different kind of judgment than someone who knew better. This lands differently depending on where you sit. If you're carrying guilt about mistakes made before you understood better, there's mercy in this. If you're wrestling with what your advantages demand of you, it's a call to take that seriously. The core idea is that God judges fairly: he looks at what you actually knew and what you actually had available to you, not at some impossible standard applied equally to everyone.
