Luke 11:52
“Woe to you lawyers! For you took away the key of knowledge. You didn’t enter in yourselves, and those who were entering in, you hindered.””
What does Luke 11:52 mean?
Jesus is expressing deep frustration with religious scholars who were supposed to help people understand God's teachings. Instead of opening doors to spiritual understanding, they built walls through complex rules and interpretations that obscured the simple truths of God's love and grace. They kept themselves locked out of genuine faith while simultaneously blocking others from finding their way in, like someone who hoards a key without using it and refuses to let anyone else through the door either. This matters because it's a warning about how institutions and leaders can unintentionally (or intentionally) make faith feel inaccessible rather than inviting. The message cuts through pride and reminds us that spiritual knowledge isn't meant to be gatekept or used as a tool for power over others.
